Setup & Usage Instructions:

Installation: OSX and Windows

IMPORTANT! Ensure you have installed all the programs listed in System Requirements and that you’re using the latest versions.

On your iPad, make sure you’re connected to the same network as your computer. This can either be your router, or an ad-hoc network running from your computer. If you’re getting slow response times using a router, try creating an ad-hoc network instead to link your iPad directly to your computer. Follow this guide for Mac. To do this on Windows 7, you can use Connectify for free. It turns your PC into a wireless hotspot. Depending on your version of Windows, setting up an ad-hoc network varies slightly. Search Google for “adhoc network” and your Windows version.

Open TouchOSC Editor and upload the TouchOSC template to your iPad by using the ‘Sync’ function. There’s a commonly reported problem of people having trouble uploading templates though TouchOSC editor. If you’re having trouble, hexler.net recommend that you try uploading the template to your iPad using iTunes instead. Just connect to iTunes, select your iPad, click the ‘Apps’ tab, click on TouchOSC and drag and drop the template in.

To connect on the iPad, press ‘Settings’ on the iPad, then ‘Wi-Fi’. From here you can choose from a list of available networks. Pick the one you’re using; either the router or the ad-hoc network you’ve just created.

There are several ways to connect your computer to TouchOSC but it’s easiest to use TouchOSC Bridge. Open TouchOSC Bridge on your computer

Open TouchOSC on your iPad and go to Settings. Ensure MIDI Bridge is enabled and you should see your computer’s name listed. Press this to connect.

Open Traktor, go to ‘Preferences’, then ‘Controller Manager’. Click the large ‘Import’ button at the bottom of this screen and browse for the TSI file. Ensure that In-Port and Out-Port on this screen are set to TouchOSC Bridge.

Usage:

Performance Modes

Commonly used mashup tools, such as hotcue buttons and beatmash / beatslice buttons are available by selecting from one of five Performance Modes. The five large pads will trigger various functions and effects depending on which mode you’re in. Holding down Shift and pressing the pads will open up even more functions and effects.

Performance Pads

Please note: the Spinback function does not work properly with the latest versions of Traktor (2.1.1+). This is due to a bug / change in Traktor. Hopefully this will be fixed by NI soon. For now though, the Spin button only does a very short (1 second) backspin.

FX Banks

There are 4 FX Banks to choose from. Each features the Beatmasher plus two other effects:

  • FX Bank 1 – Beatmasher, Gater, Reverb
  • FX Bank 2 – Beatmasher, Filter LFO, Ring Modulator
  • FX Bank 3 – Beatmasher, Ramp Delay, Phaser Flux
  • FX Bank 4 – Beatmasher, Digital Lo-Fi, Formant Filter
FX Panel

Large FX trigger buttons and sliders means you have a great deal of control over each of these effects and it’s been designed to make it easy to perform Hotcue Juggling / Beatmashing / Beatslicing performances while applying various other effects that sound good when mashed or sliced.

FX On Toggle Buttons

Use the FX On buttons to choose which deck to apply the effects to (Deck A, Deck B or either of the Sample Decks)

Loop Recorder

Loop Recorder

Traktor 2’s new Loop Recorder is also available and easy to find at the top of the screen.

From this panel, you can set loop length (indicated by the 4, 8, 16 & 32 LEDs). You can also change the dry / wet amount, as well as record, play and delete samples from whatever’s playing at the time.

Sample Decks

There are actually two Sample Deck Modes: Mode 1 and Mode 2.

Sample Deck Mode 2 LED

Press the orange button to enable Sample Mode 2. The orange LED will glow brightly to show you are in Mode 2.

Sample Deck Mode 1 LED

Hold down Shift and press the orange button to access Sample Mode 1. The orange LED will glow dim to show you are in Mode 1.

When in Sample Deck Mode 2, each of the large pads will trigger their respective Slot. Holding shift and pressing a pad will Play / Stop the sample.

In both Sample Deck Modes, Pad 5 becomes a second Shift button.

Sample Deck Mode LEDs

In Mode 2, holding the second Shift button and pressing a pad will toggle Loop / One Shot on the slot (indicated by a small blue / green LED on the pad).

In Mode 1, the pad will Mute / Unmute the slot (indicated by a small red LED on the pad). The regular Shift button and a pad will load the current sample from the Loop Recorder into the respective slot. The second Shift button and a pad will load whatever loop is playing in Deck A or B to your chosen slot.

The FX faders also act as volume controls for each of the Sample Slots when in Sample Deck Mode 1. Holding Shift will enable Filter control for each of these. In Mode 2, they act as normal, controlling your effects. Use the FX On buttons to choose where you want to apply the effects, ie., to the main deck, the Sample Deck, or both.

EQ Kill buttons and the Filter slider will affect the Sample Deck when in either of the Sample Deck Modes. Notice also that the volume LEDs will show the volume of the Sample Deck when in either of the Sample Deck modes.

Other Features / Functions:

Holding Shift and moving the fader will control the Gain amount (when in any mode other than Sample Deck Mode).

When in Hotcue Mode (red) the Hotcue Mode Button will also act as a Play / Pause button.

Holding Shift and the moving the Filter slider will change the key amount (when in any mode other than Sample Deck Mode).

Holding either Shift button and moving the dry / wet rotary will change the master volume level. The red LED in the centre of this dial will glow if the level is peaking.

When in Mash / Slice Mode (yellow), hold Shift and a pad to activate different slice patterns. Letting go of Shift first then the pad will keep the current slice pattern playing. Hold Shift and the pad again to release the slice effect.

The ‘Juggle’ buttons will knock the song back by one beat (holding Shift will push it forward one beat). When both decks are playing the same song at the same time, pressing the ‘Juggle’ button will knock the second track behind slightly, creating a ‘doubling’ effect when cutting in the second deck with the crossfader.
